MEET MEI, THE FOUNDER
Born in Malaysia to Chinese parents and raised in Australia by a full house of bakers, chefs, restaurant owners, food businesses, home cooks, and (some say extreme) food lovers, Mei was always exposed to a bold variety of cuisines and exotic ingredients.
At the Yong House, fresh croissants baking in the oven and simmering pots of curry on the stove weren’t a special occasion, but a daily affair, where food is the highest expression of love and care.
“In our busy multicultural family life, it wasn’t the glue that held us together, it was the curry and satays, and stirfrys, and dahl...the food!”
THE BEGINNING OF TURBAN CHOPSTICKS
Mei started Turban Chopsticks out of an inconvenience she encountered in her own life, early in her career.
“As I entered adulthood, my lifestyle changed. I was a busy working professional who travelled a lot and didn’t have much time to cook. After a long day, the last thing I wanted to do is spend hours in the kitchen. But, I still wanted a meal that was healthy and tasted amazing. I knew I wasn’t the only one who craved authentic home cooked meals - the kind I grew up with - but also didn’t want to use prepackaged food with suspicious ingredients and origins, or have the time to source and cook everything from scratch.”
Mei still cooked of course, especially for family and friends who begged for her secret recipes, but she soon identified a gap in the market for pre-made meal kits and curry sauces with bold flavours that used clean ingredients.
FOOD WITH HEART
Mei created Turban Chopsticks to give busy mums and dads, working professionals, and enthusiastic home cooks a sneaky shortcut. A shortcut to beautifully home cooked Asian and Indian inspired meals complete with unmistakable authentic flavour.
“Turban Chopsticks is my life’s work and passion. It’s the combination of all my food influences, my culture and heritage, my love of spices, and my desire to share beautiful nutritious food all wrapped up in a range of colourful meal kits and sauce jars.”
